Good vegetable garden plans produce an abundance of food

Clever vegetable garden design will always ensure you achieve healthy plants and an abundance of food.

I guess it might take another vegetable gardener to appreciate just how lovely it is to visit someone’s home for dinner and wander out with the host to their garden and help select fresh produce for the meal. There is nothing in the world like it in my opinion.

What takes a few seconds to choose in the supermarket can take ages in the garden. No gardener wants to pick a vegetable that shows more promise, every decision is thought over carefully before the final cut is made.

I invariably find conversations wander towards gardening and recipes as we so carefully check each plant to make sure we are taking the very best one for the meal. Some are left to grow larger, some are left to ripen, some are left until its possible to collect more but none are chosen at random.

It is such a compliment to be offered fresh home grown produce when eating at someone’s home. I can assure you, vegetable gardeners are generally very discerning as to who they offer their food to – not everyone get such opportunities.

Recently I had two such opportunities with avid vegetable gardeners. It was almost meditative to be out in the garden in late dusk helping them choose which vegetables we would eat for dinner.

Time seems to stand still as we find ourselves comparing stories on our various successes and failures with vegetables. The one thing that is always constant is the true love of growing vegetables, there is nothing in gardening that brings more joy to so many.

When and if you do get offered home grown vegetables remember to accept them as more than just food, they are a gift from the heart and only offered to people the gardener truly likes.

This organic potato salad was created from freshly dug potatoes and crisp new spring onions. All were taken from the garden and eaten within an hour – naturally and organically grown – a gift shared with friends – Thanks.
